AI Ethics - from Responsibility to Democracy, Inaugural Lecture Prof. Dr. Filippo Santoni de Sio
ECPAI Member Prof.dr. Filippo Santoni de Sio was appointed as a full-time professor of Ethics of Technology at the Department of Industrial Engineering and Innovation Sciences at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) on September 1, 2024. He will deliver his inaugural lecture on Thursday, November 13, 2025. Beforehand, there will also be a symposium on AI and Creative Work, featuring the invited guests Prof. David Abbink, Prof. Cristina Zaga, Caterina Moruzzi, and Prof. Sven Nyholm. About the Lecture
In his lecture, Professor Santoni de Sio will focus on his work on the ethics of artificial intelligence (AI). AI systems must be developed in line with principles of responsibility, justice, and democracy. AI’s complexity and opacity may create responsibility gaps: circumstances in which no human agent can be held responsible for a system’s (undesirable) behavior.
Yet in domains such as transportation, warfare, healthcare, AI must be designed to ensure meaningful human control, thereby preserving human agency and moral responsibility. Control also has a social dimension, as AI systems may unjustly marginalize the voices of patients in healthcare or affect the autonomy of the workforce in organizations. The innovation process must therefore be democratized, allowing people to actively contribute to the technological transformation that will affect them.
Philosophy can help redesign technologies and reframe innovation practices through the lens of responsibility, justice, and democracy. However, such a structural change requires the creation of spaces where researchers and interested parties can develop the concepts and practices needed to realize these ideals.
